The gardens of the Château de Villandry

The Château de Villandry, located about 20 minutes from the hotel in Athée-sur-Cher, is the last of the great Renaissance chateaux of Val de Loire, and its gardens, laid out in terraces, are breathtakingly beautiful. Five French gardens perfectly reflect the architectural skill of the Renaissance. The vegetable garden, with its dazzling colours, extends across almost one hectare. The ornamental garden is divided into two areas. The first is dedicated to love and is based around four themes: “tender love”, “passionate love”, “fickle love” and “tragic love”. The second area is dedicated to music and has harps and lyres. The walk continues to the “Physic Garden” dedicated to aromatic and medicinal plants, then the “Water Garden”, which forms a Louis XV looking glass. Finally, the “Sun Garden” dominates the entire domain. Designed by Henry Carvalho, the current owner, this garden plays homage to his great grandfather Joachim, the man behind the Villandry gardens.
